Adjacent to Washington and Oregon in the Pacific Northwest, Idaho is a big state. It’s been said if you flatten all the mountains in Idaho, the state would be the size of Texas. Idaho’s history lies with its native tribes, the Lewis and Clark Expedition and determined pioneers on the Oregon Trail. Today’s Idaho is both cosmopolitan and small-town friendly. Boise, the capital and largest city, developed near Fort Boise along the Oregon Trail has grown to a population of 190,000. Agriculture, manufacturing and tourism are Idaho’s major industries. Abundant outdoor recreation opportunities and scenic vistas around every turn attract over 20 million tourists annually.

Hells Canyon South Entrance

Hells Canyon is one of the most remote places in the Pacific Northwest you can dare to venture in. Your Hells Canyon Adventure will begin long before you reach the jet boats. Your senses will awaken as you travel through the natural landscape which remains mostly undeveloped, undisturbed and uncrowded; where the air is still fresh. Allow extra time to stop at the viewpoints for wildlife sightings and see the geological formations. The drive into the South Entrance of Hells Canyon is so unique that it has been designated as an All American Scenic Byway, listed as a Top Ten Scenic Drive in the Northern Rockies.

Hells Canyon Adventures (HCA) is the only licensed outfitter that offers jet boat tours, fishing charters, and shuttle services that start at the South Entrance. The South Entrance of Hells Canyon is where the elevation is over a mile and half deep. Hells Canyon is deeper than the Grand Canyon! Hells Canyon is a low relief canyon which means that you don’t see the deepest point at all times while navigating through the canyon. That’s why it is so important that you travel through the South Entrance so you don’t miss seeing He Devil Mountain which is 9,393 feet above sea level. The canyon plunges 7,913 feet, one and a half miles from its summit to the mouth of Granite Creek, 6 miles away, at 1,480 feet above sea level.

There are three ways to travel into the south entrance of Hells Canyon, Highway 86 from Baker City, Oregon, Highway 71 from Cambridge, Idaho, or USFS Road #39 from Enterprise, Oregon. All roads lead to the famed “Devils Tail,” the last 22 miles from Oxbow to the Hells Canyon Dam. All roads are paved. All services offered by Hells Canyon Adventures begin and return 1 mile below (north) Hells Canyon Dam.
